What Are Multi-Color Designs?
Multi-color layered designs use different colored layers stacked together to create complex, colorful graphics. Each color is placed on its own layer for easy editing and organization.
Plan Your Design
Sketch out your design and identify which parts will be which colors. Each color becomes a separate layer. Consider the stacking order - bottom layers appear behind top layers.
Create the Base Layer
Start with the bottom/background layer. This is typically the largest element or the outline. Create this on its own layer in the Layers panel and name it (e.g., "Background - Blue").
Add Color Layers
Create a new layer for each additional color. Draw or place elements that will be that color on the appropriate layer. Use different fill colors in the editor to visualize each layer.
Align All Layers Perfectly
Select elements across layers and use alignment tools to ensure perfect registration. All layers must align exactly or the final design will look misaligned. Use guides and snap to grid for precision.
Add Shadow/Offset Layers (Optional)
For professional effects, create offset paths behind text or shapes. Use the offset tool to create a slightly larger version, place it on a separate layer behind, and use a contrasting color.
Organize and Name Layers
Name each layer clearly with the color and purpose (e.g., "Red - Accent", "White - Text", "Black - Shadow"). This makes it easy to identify and edit specific parts of your design.
Export Your Design
Export as SVG to preserve all layers. Each layer will be maintained in the exported file, making it easy to edit or use in other applications.
Pro Tips
• Use different colors in the editor to clearly visualize each layer • Test alignment by toggling layer visibility • Keep layer names consistent and descriptive • Consider the visual hierarchy when arranging layers • Group related elements within each layer for easier management
